Machine Type and Model Number Available Using Software Label

A method for displaying current system label information is
described.  The correct system information is always displayed
because this label is determined and presented by software in the
system.

The central processing unit (CPU) provides the system label
information to the panel controller 1.  The panel controller 1
software stores the current system label information 2.

The panel controller 1 supports the software label display.
The label information is retrieved from the panel controller 1
storage area 3 and displayed 4 for end-user readability 5 on the
hardware panel display 6.

When the CPU is upgraded, the system needs a new identification
label to reflect the new type or model of the system.  At this time,
the CPU sends the updated information to the panel controller 7.  The
new information is then used for the label display (see the figure).
