Large Area Condition Indicator Light

A condition indicator signal light is provided for indicating
the status of an apparatus, e.g., a self-service money dispenser,  if
it is operative, by signalling green or inoperative, by signalling
red.

The indicator has a relative large light field area so that it
is visible easily by a user from a rather far distance.  The
condition indicator is set up from a densely packed pairs of a red
and a green light-emitting diode arranged separately on ceramic
chips.  The distance between the red and the green LED is
approximately 1 mm.  Four of those pairs can be arranged on a 3 by 6
mm ceramic chip.

Those ceramic chips containing the red/green LEDs are then
arranged in several rows and several columns on a printed circuit
board.  On the frontside they are covered with translucent epoxy
serving as a diffusor.  Thus, a condition indicator light having a
large light field of homogenous appearance is formed.

As the red and green LED within a pair are closely adjacent to
each other, the condition change, i.e., from green to red or vice
versa, is performed on the very same overall area.  Therefore, no
detrimental traffic light effect with changing positions of
indicating lights is associated with this signal light change.

An example of the condition indicator light used for indicating
the open or closed status of an ATM money dispenser is the following:
