Method of Attaching a Ribbon Guide to a Ribbon Cartridge

Disclosed is a method of attaching a ribbon guide to a ribbon
cartridge so that the ribbon does not get tangled during shipment and
the user can easily and correctly install the guide in the printer.

Ribbon guides that are attached to the ribbon will hang down or
flip over, twisting the ribbon.  Special packaging is required to
prevent twisting of the ribbon during shipment.  These problems can
be solved by designing the cartridge and the ribbon guide so that the
ribbon guide can be stored on the cartridge during shipment and
removed from the ribbon cartridge during installation for correct
placement in the printer.

Fig. 1 shows the ribbon guide (1) attached to the ribbon
cartridge (2) as the cartridge would be shipped.  Hooks on the tabs
(4) of the ribbon guide snap into posts (3) on the top of the ribbon
cartridge.  The user squeezes the tabs on the guide and lifts the
guide away from the cartridge.  The user then places the guide onto
the posts (5) on the printer as shown in Fig. 2.  When a worn ribbon
cartridge is removed from the printer, the same squeezing motion is
used to remove the guide from the printer as will be used to remove
the guide from its storage position on top of the ribbon cartridge.
Storing the guide on the cartridge prevents the ribbon from being
twisted and insures that the ribbon will be correctly installed in
the printer.
