Air Bearings for Magnetic Disk Drive Rotary and Linear Actuators

      Both actuator types are currently supported by ball bearings.
There are proposals to use also air bearings in conjunction with
external air pumps.

      With ever-increasing track densities, vibrations generated by
and transmitted via the bearings are a limiting factor.

      The core of the present proposal is the usage of self-pumping
spiral groove air/oil bearings for this application with an estimated
performance increase of at least a factor of 10.

      It is provided to rotate the normally stationary shaft by a
small motor at high RPM thus self-pumping the spiral groove radial
and axial bearings 1a, 1b and 2.

      By this provision the rotary actuator is now freely supported
by the radial 1b and axial 2 spiral groove bearings, and its
oscillatory movement with stand-still during direction reversal does
not disturb the necessary bearing pressure.

      The proposal can also be used for linear actuators by rotating
the rails containing the spiral groove bearings of this actuator
type.
