Pre-Conditioners for Plastic Surface

      Disclosed is a process to provide a low cost method to clean
preconditioned plastic surfaces with a unique formulation.  This
ensures adequate adhesion between metal and plastic.

      To metallize plastic (non-conductive) surfaces, they must be
preconditioned.  The preconditions are accomplished by immersing the
media into water-base or solvent base make-ups.  During the immersion
operation, the plastic surfaces are activated, thus making it
suitable for non-conductive surface metalization.  Upon surface
activation, the plastic surfaces are cleaned as well as slightly
etched.  The etching is necessary to ensure adequate adhesion between
metal deposit and the target surface.

The preconditioners are generally selected from two groups:

A.  Water-based formulation:

SWELLERS   (N-METHYL-2-PYRROLIDONE)       APPROX.  30% W/W

ACTIVATORS (SODIUM/POTASSIUM HYDROXIDES)  APPROX.  17% W/W

COMPLEX/STABILIZERS (TRI-ETHANOLAMINE)    APPROX.  3% W/W

WATER                                     APPROX  50% W/W

B.  Solvent-based formulations: These are selected to provide
    make ups which are low cost and do not harm the
    environment.

SWELLERS   (BENZYL ALCOHOL)              APPROX.  23% W/W

ACTIVATORS (ACETONE, METHYL ETHYL KETONE,
