Abstract

Current art provides a plurality of means by which a user can request a reply to a specified distribution. Most notable is IBM's PROFs Reply-By feature which allows a user to specify a particular date/time by which the originator desires a reply to the distribution. However, the prior art has failed to address the media or location of where a user will be at the specified time. A classic example is that a user may request a reply, but have a very dynamic schedule for the week. Under this circumstance the user will not be able to receive the reply during specified time intervals. For example, the user may be in a hotel, or at a customer's site at a specified time after the initial distribution was sent.

Reply-After Preference Communication Mechanism

Current art provides a plurality of means by which a user can
request a reply to a specified distribution.  Most notable is IBM's
PROFs Reply-By feature which allows a user to specify a particular
date/time by which the originator desires a reply to the
distribution.  However, the prior art has failed to address the media
or location of where a user will be at the specified time.  A classic
example is that a user may request a reply, but have a very dynamic
schedule for the week.  Under this circumstance the user will not be
able to receive the reply during specified time intervals.  For
example, the user may be in a hotel, or at a customer's site at a
specified time after the initial distribution was sent.

This article describes a method that essentially allows a dual
mode for which Reply-After times can direct specified replies for
particular distributions:

1.  The originator can explicitly state within an auxiliary field of
the Reply-After parameter a specified medium and associated media
parameters if the reply is made after a particular time.

2.  The originator can specify a calendar reference for which a
medium and associated media parameters should be made at the time
    of the reply.

By providing the identifiers within the communication protocol
the user has obtained the following benefits:

o   Allow originators to specify preferred media for reply.
