Abstract

Reel-to-reel and cartridge tape drives are configured with a source of clean compressed air that has its pressure adjustment at the source or very close to it. The adjustment is accomplished with either a spring-actuated relief valve or a fixed orifice in the form of an air speed control valve. Either method requires valuable space in the drive for hose nipples, tees and mounting hardware. The adjustable air bearing eliminates all of the above except the compressor and filter.

Adjustable Tape Drive Air Bearing

      Reel-to-reel and cartridge tape drives are configured with a
source of clean compressed air that has its pressure adjustment at
the source or very close to it.  The adjustment is accomplished with
either a spring-actuated relief valve or a fixed orifice in the form
of an air speed control valve.  Either method requires valuable space
in the drive for hose nipples, tees and mounting hardware.  The
adjustable air bearing eliminates all of the above except the
compressor and filter.

      Proposed is a manually adjusted air bearing (Figure).  The air
bearing would be configured with a slot located in back of the
discharge openings.  A perforated gate would be placed in the slot
with a tab that would protrude up through the compliant guide.  The
tab would have a zipper/zip lock system to prevent air from escaping
when an adjustment is taking place.  The slide would behave as a
slide gate valve.  The perforated gate would act to close or open the
discharge holes to provide the required amount of air.

      The solution would eliminate the current devices used for this
purpose which would yield a decrease in drive cost and a decrease in
the space required for pneumatics in the tape drive.
