Surface Finish Apparatus for Thin Film Disks

A method for winding and controlling a buff tape used for media
disk burnishing is disclosed.

The Figure shows the tooling with the base mountable unit 1 and
the removable reel portion 2.  The bottom reel 3 is the tape feed
which is wound around rollers 4, 5, 6, and finally taken up on reel 7
which is driven by motor 8.  The removable reel portion 2 is held in
place by screw 9 and is positioned as shown.  The bottom feed reel 3
is held in place by the magnetic brake 10 which in turn provides a
consistent force on the reel 3 when tension is used to unwind the
reel.  This tension can be both from the top driver reel 7 or the air
which comes out of the tubes 11.  In operation, the disk 12 comes
between the two extended portions of the tooling, and the air forces
the tape to the disk's surface as the disk spins at a nominal RPM.
This provides the finishing action to the disk's surface.
