Abstract

Disclosed is a method that provides a progress indicator which is unique to data base searches, thus reminding users that any time lag is due to the time needed to search through the large data base. Several features are included. First, the icon beside the field (Figure) indicates the pulldown will access a database when selected and that access will take some time. Second, once the database access begins the dropdown menu appears (in background) and is slowly filled with the names of the referenced packages as they are found. In foreground, an animated progress indicator appears. This progress indicator is a disk drive and fill indicator, with arrows which move in a circle to indicate that action is taking place. The progress is indicated by the box which is being filled (darkened) as progress is made.

Data Base Progress Indicator

Disclosed is a method that provides a progress indicator which
is unique to data base searches, thus reminding users that any time
lag is due to the time needed to search through the large data base.
Several features are included.  First, the icon beside the field
(Figure) indicates the pulldown will access a database when selected
and that access will take some time.  Second, once the database
access begins the dropdown menu appears (in background) and is slowly
filled with the names of the referenced packages as they are found.
In foreground, an animated progress indicator appears.  This progress
indicator is a disk drive and fill indicator, with arrows which move
in a circle to indicate that action is taking place.  The progress is
indicated by the box which is being filled (darkened) as progress is
made.  And as mentioned above, the exact progress that is being made
is evident from watching the names of the packages fill the
background.
