Abstract

Disclosed herein is a method that measures the pressure distribution applied to component leads being soldered to surface patterns of multilayer boards by the blades of hot blade soldering equipment. Blade pressure is traditionally measured with force gauges which indicate the total force applied at some point of contact between the blades, the force gauge and the force gauge supporting member, but does not indicate the distribution of the force or pressure over the surface area of the blades. The disclosed method measures the pressure distribution of the soldering blades, that when used in conjunction with total force measurement, reveals an accurate picture of the blade/component lead interaction during soldering.

Hot Blade Soldering Pressure Distribution Measurement Method

      Disclosed herein is a method that measures the pressure
distribution applied to component leads being soldered to surface
patterns of multilayer boards by the blades of hot blade soldering
equipment.  Blade pressure is traditionally measured with force
gauges which indicate the total force applied at some point of
contact between the blades, the force gauge and the force gauge
supporting member, but does not indicate the distribution of the
force or pressure over the surface area of the blades.  The disclosed
method measures the pressure distribution of the soldering blades,
that when used in conjunction with total force measurement, reveals

soldering.

      In Fig. 1, high durometer rubber (1) is placed on set-up block
(2).  Metal foil sheet (3) is placed on high durometer rubber (1).
Soldering blades (4) are centered over the metal foil (3) and machine
blade force is applied to the set-up.  Blade pressure distribution
pattern is embossed in metal foil (3).  Fig. 2 illustrates the blades
pressure distribution embossment in metal foil (3).
