Transparent Awning Dust Cover

Described is an arrangement to prevent dust contamination of a
VDAT tape drive mechanism.  Dust is drawn into the drive mechanism
through either the cracks around the front door or the door opening
if an operator chooses to not close the door after removing a tape
cartridge.

The arrangement involves a flexible, compliant cover or shield
(1) that attaches to the tape cartridge front access door (2) and
addresses both dust contamination scenarios.  The device is made of a
transparent plastic material that is folded into the "file folder"
shape seen in the Figure.  A wire frame of spring steel (3) serves to
help the device maintain the desired shape and provides the light
force required to hold the device in the "open" position shown.
There is an adhesive attachment of the dust cover to the front
periphery of the cartridge compartment access door.

When the door is closed, the dust cover is folded flat against
the front face of the drive.  As the door opens, the spring inside
the dust cover keeps the rear face of the dust cover tightly against
the front of the drive while the front of the dust cover travels with
the door.  The operator can access the tape cartridge by pulling the
tab (4) at the top of the dust cover to fold it forward.

This device serves as an effective seal against dust intrusion
with the door either closed or open.  It can be attached to a machine
in the field as well as new build...
