Roll-Up Finger Mat to Replace Mouse

      Disclosed is the detection of finger position on a contact mat
to indicate an X Y position on a VDU screen.   It provides mouse-type
interaction without the need to feel for the mouse when moving ones'
hand from a keyboard.   Benefits are light weight, ease of
manufacture, and, when rolled up, the ability to be  carried in a
narrow space in a portable computer.

      An embodiment is to use a two-dimensional (2d) mesh of wires as
a mat with finger detection to indicate position.   When the finger
is placed on the mat, an electrical leakage skin contact is made
between horizontal and vertical wires of grid.

      Enamel-insulated wires could make a mesh which could be woven
or integrated in a mat, and areas of the wires made 'touchable' by
removing insulation from the top surface by abrasion.   The mat could
be arranged to be thin and able to roll up inside the right-hand side
of a portable computer keyboard.

      The system could detect the position of more than one finger
which could be used to allow the index finger to indicate position
and another finger contact to be used as a button press.   It could
also be used where more than 2d input was required.   The system
would not return accurate absolute position due to the finite size of
the finger, but should satisfy mouse-style relative positions and
obviate Touch Screen and roller ball devices.
