Multi-Layer Shock Absorber for Conveyor Applications

      Multi-layer design concept for vibration shock reduction is
proposed for disk drive conveyer systems.

      Hard Disk Drive assemblies are sensitive to vibration shocks
during manufacturing process.  Head/disk slap damage has been
reported during handling and transportation of the files on the
existing fixtures and pallets.  During the initial investigation, the
the top of the pallet was fitted with a soft pad to minimize the
shock transmitted to the disk drive during handling of the file;
however, damage during transportation of the file still occurred on
the lines.  Dings on heads and disks were still apparent.  Additional
improvements were needed to eliminate the shocks transmitted to the
fixtures and pallets on the benches and conveyor.

      To minimize the vibrations transmitted to the file, a
multi-layer prototype was built as shown in the figure.  The
multi-layer concept consists of laying one or more layers of soft
material between the metal plates (rigid); the layers of soft
material act as dampeners and changes the natural frequency of the
pallet.

      An accelerometer was mounted onto a disk of a disk drive to
monitor the response to a sweep sine input.  In the absence of the
soft pad, the disks are highly excited at their natural frequencies
which contributes to the disk/head damage.  The conveyers fitted with
