To-Can Opener

A device is disclosed which solves the problem of removing the
welded hermetic cap from a TO (Transistor Outline) package, without
damaging the microelectronic chip(s) and wires inside.  The device,
TO-CAN OPENER,  provides a quick and clean solution for analysis of
the contents of a fully assembled TO package.

Removing the lid from a TO package for subsequent analysis of
the package and contents is not usually done, because the lids are
welded on, and the microelectronic or optoelectronic contents are
damaged easily rendering the whole analysis job useless.  In the very
best case, an experienced machinist may be able to cut the lid off
with the use of sophisticated machining equipment, but this is
expensive and can lead to failures of the chips in the TO especially
in the case of devices sensitive to Electro-Static Discharge (ESD).

The TO-CAN OPENER is a tool specifically designed to quickly
and cleanly remove the lid from an assembled TO package.  It is easy
to use and portable.  The result is a cleanly cut lid and the
internal components remain perfectly intact.

One embodiment of the TO-CAN OPENER is depicted in the figure
below.  It consists of a holder, rollers and a cutting wheel.  It can
be grounded for use with ESD sensitive microelectronic and or
optoelectronic devices.  The TO-CAN OPENER holds the packaged device
between a cutting wheel and rollers.  Rotating the middle section of
the base by hand a...
