Abstract

This window still provides the command line interface to AIX* to the experienced user but now includes user definable function buttons, a history window for command retrieval, on-line help for commands, and ability to drag and drop icons (files) between the AIXTERM and AIXwindows Desktop. Thus, the terminal window as used by experienced users remains unchanged, while the user-friendly enhancements that are needed by the novice user are also available.

AIXTERM Terminal Window Enhancements

This window still provides the command line interface to AIX*
to the experienced user but now includes user definable function
buttons, a history window for command retrieval, on-line help for
commands, and ability to drag and drop icons (files) between the
AIXTERM and AIXwindows Desktop.  Thus, the terminal window as used by
experienced users remains unchanged, while the user-friendly
enhancements that are needed by the novice user are also available.

Tools exist that help the novice user operate complex operating
systems within AIX.  An example is AIXwindows Desktop which is a very
simple graphical user interface that hides the details and commands
necessary to control AIX from the novice user.  On the other hand,
the experienced user finds such tools cumbersome to operate and
prefers the command line method for controlling the system.  No tools
exist that help the novice user easily transition from the simple
icon driven interface into the more efficient command line driven
interface.

The solution is to enhance the AIXTERM terminal window (the
command line interface of the experienced user) to include some
features that the novice user is more familiar with and that make the
terminal window easier to operate.  Ideally, the commands necessary
to control the operating system would become more visible to the user
so that they may begin to learn what they are and how they work,
while not forcing command use on them.

AIXTERM enhancements have been constructed as a wrap around
tool for the AIXTERM terminal window.

These enhancements include:

o   User definable function buttons/keys that allow the user to
perform tasks by pressing buttons or function keys that have been
