Step Edge Flexible Cable for Hard Disk Drive

      A program is disclosed in which air leakage of Head Disk
Assembly (HDA) is improved to minimize the air gap among seal base
(and/or cover) and flexible cable.

      A hard disk drive is composed of an HDA and a Printed Circuit
Board (PCB), as shown in Fig. 1.  The HDA is sealed against particles
to prevent Head Disk Interference (HDI).  Actually, HDA is not
completely sealed be cause the HDA has several small air gaps.  One
of them is the gap between the seal base (and/or cover) and flexible
cable (Fig. 2).  This air gap is generally permissible.  But this air
gap frequently causes an air leakage problem.

      Fig. 3 shows the section of current flexible cable and the
section of that in assembly (base/cover/seal).  The flexible cable is
composed of base film, cover film and others (Fig. 3).  It is
possible for the air gap to be minimized by changing the length of
cover film and base film (Fig. 4).  The different length between the
cover film and base film minimizes the air gap between seal base
(and/or cover) and flexible cable (Fig. 4).

      It is easy for this improvement of flexible cable to be made
without additional cost (Fig. 5).
