Abstract

This disclosure provides an extended pie menu which allows the entire menu bar to be placed on the pie. In a user interface where speed of selection is important, pie menus have been developed which reduce seek time. Fig. 1 shows such a pie menu. If the cursor is in the middle of the menu, selection can take place quickly in any direction with a minimum seek time. An extension can be implemented as shown in Fig. 2. Here, the pie is extended, looking much like a dart board. The inner circle lists the categories, and as one moves farther out in concentric circles, the items under each category are listed. In an alternative implementation, the user clicks on one of the menu categories and the items within that category are then displayed for user selection. This results in the dynamically expanded pie chart shown in Fig. 3.
