Automated and Visual Mapping of Sort Keys to an Index

Provided is a technique for visually assigning sort keys to an
indexing mechanism in order to overcome deficiencies with
conventional techniques.

Provide a visual control for mapping sort keys to the indexing
mechanism.  The visual ocntrol is a linear scale that simultaneously
maps the sort keys and the index.  The following features are
provided:

o   A visual representation of each index element.

o   Sort keys are visually associated with index elements.

o   Boundaries are directly manipulable

o   Sliding boundaries on the scale automatically slides other index
elements to prevent collision of sort keys.

o   Index elements casn be edited, e.g., add, delete, etc.

An end user will experience the following benefits:

o   new functionality,

o   improved usability, and

o   reduced errors and worksteps.
