Abstract

Prior art allows a user to listen to a phone message, then place a return call to the originator of that call by pressing the appropriate phone key sequence (i.e., 7-0). However, that originator may not be available when the return call is placed. Furthermore, there are ways to determine whether that person is probably available, and, if not, when he/she will be available. For these cases, the user needs a way to determine the best time to return the call, with a high probability of a connection (without playing phone tag).

Method for Optimal Return of Calls

      Prior art allows a user to listen to a phone message, then
place a return call to the originator of that call by pressing the
appropriate phone key sequence (i.e., 7-0).  However, that originator
may not be available when the return call is placed.  Furthermore,
there are ways to determine whether that person is probably
available, and, if not, when he/she will be available.  For these
cases, the user needs a way to determine the best time to return the
call, with a high probability of a connection (without playing phone
tag).

      This system provides a phone user with the best time/times to
return phone messages.  When a phone message is received, the system
examines the caller's calendar (and, optionally, this user's
calendar) looking for any indication of high probability time slots
when that caller could likely be reached with a return phone call.
Then when this user listens to this message and performs an
unsuccessful call back, an indication is received of high probability
time slots, and the appropriate reminders are set.

      For example, a user calls a second user at 1:30 P.M.  and
leaves a message.  The system then performs a free-time search.  It
checks the caller's calendar and finds that the caller is in one
meeting from 1:30 P.M.  to 4:00 P.M.  and another meeting from 4:30
P.M.  to 5:00 P.M.  Therefore, the system determines that the best
time for the callee to return the call is at 4:00 P.M...
