Abstract

Users often desire to electronically communicate with individuals and the modern office allows a plurality of communication mechanisms such as telephone, Email, facsimile, etc. Depending on the characteristics, purpose, cost, users, time-of-day, etc., users must decide on the best mode to establish the communique. In addition, depending on the purpose of the communique users may decide on a differing attribute to utilize within a specified media. There is a desire by which a service, knowing of the user's classifications for a communique, establishes the appropriate media and access code for establishing a communication session. For example, if the communique is URGENT and within business hours of the recipient, automatically dial the recipient, rather than send an electronic note.

Preferred Media Communication Establishment Mechanism

Users often desire to electronically communicate with
individuals and the modern office allows a plurality of communication
mechanisms such as telephone, Email, facsimile, etc.  Depending on
the characteristics, purpose, cost, users, time-of-day, etc., users
must decide on the best mode to establish the communique.  In
addition, depending on the purpose of the communique users may decide
on a differing attribute to utilize within a specified media.  There
is a desire by which a service, knowing of the user's classifications
for a communique, establishes the appropriate media and access code
for establishing a communication session.  For example, if the
communique is URGENT and within business hours of the recipient,
automatically dial the recipient, rather than send an electronic
note.  Prior methods, typically, require the user to select a medium
and then assign attributes to the communiques, even if the medium is
not the best medium to be utilized.  It should be apparent that users
desire a method and apparatus by which the preferred mode of
communication, according to their personal criteria, can be
automatically established upon specifying the communique attributes.

Provided is a communique service that accesses a user's
specified attributes and presents methods for establishing a
communique to a user.  For example, upon entering the communique
attributes the service automatically invokes the facsimile
application as this is the best mode for the current date/time,
location, etc., based upon the rules established by the
user/administrator.  Another example, the service may respond with a
prompt instructing the user to wait a few minutes for the telephone
rates to change.

This mechanism uses an Attribute Presentation Service that
allows users to specify the characteristics given for the communique.
For example, the user can specify Urgent, Personal or even cost
constraints, such as under $5.00, for the communique.  Note that
typical distribution service elements, such as the X.400 P2 service
elements can be used as the base subset of attributes for user
selection.  Upon the user selecting key attributes, the key
attributes are used as input into a user-defined rule-based table.
This table has a series of user-defined rules for which the
attributes are compared against.  It should be noted that the input
presentation service may optionally be a conventional distribution
service; e.g., the use...
