Queue Control

Graphical User Interfaces do not provide a control specifically
designed to manipulate queues (ordered lists of objects waiting to be
processed).  This article describes such a control.

Queue Control Definition

A "queue control" is a control containing text or graphics, or
both, representing a queue, the items in that queue, and the type of
item in the queue.  The control also allows a user to select and move
items within and between queues.  The queue control consists of a
queue base, queue item icons, and optionally a scale and queue
partitions.

Queue Control Use

A queue control is a representation of a queue.  In a queue
control, queue item icons are placed in a stack over the queue base.
Each queue item icon represents one or more objects in the physical
queue.  Optionally, a scale may be placed perpendicular to the queue
base showing the number of objects at intervals in the queue.  If
there is more than one type of item in the queue, each type of item
may be assigned a different queue item icon, or groups of items may
be separated by queue partitions placed parallel to the queue base.

Any selection technique may be used to move a queue item icon
and the associated physical object from one position in the queue to
another.  In addition, queue item icons and the associated physical
object may be moved to other queue controls or, indeed, to other
appropriate objects, for the application.
