Abstract

Prior art provides an automatic acknowledgement to the originator when the recipient of an E-mail item receives the item. Prior art also allows the originator to specify particular User IDs, such a manner that an acknowledgement will also be received if the mail item is forwarded to any of those IDs. However, the originator would frequently like to receive an acknowledgement if a particular note is ever sent to anyone else, and the originator would like to be able to track all soft copies of the note as well as the various paths the copies have navigated through the various User IDs in the system.

Method of Automatic Acknowledgement of E-Mail Items when Received
by New Recipients

Prior art provides an automatic acknowledgement to the
originator when the recipient of an E-mail item receives the item.
Prior art also allows the originator to specify particular User IDs,
such a manner that an acknowledgement will also be received if the
mail item is forwarded to any of those IDs.  However, the originator
would frequently like to receive an acknowledgement if a particular
note is ever sent to anyone else, and the originator would like to be
able to track all soft copies of the note as well as the various
paths the copies have navigated through the various User IDs in the
system.

For example, the originator of a note sends the note to a
single recipient, and specifies that it is "For Your Eyes Only".
However, the originator cannot be sure that the recipient doesn't
forward the note to another user.  A method is needed to inform the
originator of any forwarding of the note, as well as the UserID paths
navigated by the forwarded copies.

This system allows the originator of an E-mail note to track
the navigation of a note through the mail system and to receive
acknowledgement of any forwarding of the note from any user to any
other user.  The originator sends a note with the All Acknowledgement
(AA) option which specifies to the system that the sender is to
receive acknowledgement whenever any new recipient receives this
note, even if said recipient is not on the originator's designated
recipient list.  The note carries the AA attribute and the UserID of
this originator, so any subsequent sending (i.e., forwarding,
replying, etc.) of this note by any user to any other user will
generate an acknowledgement to the originator.  Furthermore, the
system tracks all soft copies...
