Abstract

This new design consists of a base plate with a triangular stiff fixture to hold disk stacker 2, 3 and one rotary actuator 4. Disk spacing of each disk stack is at the minimum of the state of the art (e.g., 2 - 3mm) to allow for free movement of the head arms 5, 6. The disk stacks are merged so that the OD (outer diameter) of the stack 2 reaches to the ID (inner diameter) of stack 3. The actuator 4 is positioned closely between/towards the OD of the two disk stacks so as to minimize space requirements. Two head arms 5, 6 are mounted on the rotary actuator 4 in such a way that the heads 9, 10 on both head arms 5, 6 are as follows:

4 is positioned closely between/towards the OD of the two disk stacks
so as to minimize space requirements.  Two head arms 5, 6 are mounted
on the rotary actuator 4 in such a way that the heads 9, 10 on both
head arms 5, 6 are as follows:

o   for clockwise extreme position, head 9 is at the outermost OD of
    the disk stack 2 and head 10 is at the innermost ID of the disk
    stack;

o   for counter clockwise extreme actuator position, the inverse is
    true for the head position.

      The disk stack rotational direction is as indicated in the
drawing.  Disk stack 2 is rotating clockwise; stack 3 counter
clockwise.  The air flow is directed this way through the filter 12.
The new HDA design could be further improved by adding a second
rotary arm 11.
