Method for Identifying Active Host Environment in Direct Connect
Application

Provided is identification of which host server is currently
active to a Direct Connect Graphical User Interface (GUI) through a
change in mouse cursor appearance.  A user may configure a system to
have a unique mouse cursor specific to a particular host back-end
server.

Currently, personal computer interfaces provide icons, panels
and other objects to facilitate user interaction with various
applications running on a computer.  Direct Connect provides a GUI
front end to a host-server.  It is preferable to prevent a user from
managing multiple objects of the same type for the sake of
communicating with a variety of host server applications.  For
example, a user should not be burdened with managing multiple mail
inbasket, calendar and Address Book icons.  A generic direct connect
environment will use exactly the same icons with a different active
host server on the back end.  A user should perceive the same GUI
interface regardless of the back end.  Nuances of the particular host
systems should be concealed in detailed levels of the applications,
not at the highest level such as icons for accessing various
applications.  A method is needed for indicating to a user which host
server is currently active for a Generic Direct Connect GUI on a
workstation desktop.
