Abstract

A tool capable of handling disks 95mm, 130mm, and 275mm in diameter was required for use on a production line to minimize setup time when switching from one product size to another during processing. This article describes a disk gripper that satisfied this requirement; it is capable of switching between 275mm, 130mm, and 95mm disks with a minimal down time required for changeover.

Disk Gripper

A tool capable of handling disks 95mm, 130mm, and 275mm in
diameter was required for use on a production line to minimize setup
time when switching from one product size to another during
processing.  This article describes a disk gripper that satisfied
this requirement; it is capable of switching between 275mm, 130mm,
and 95mm disks with a minimal down time required for changeover.

Fig. 1 shows the gripper configured for 275mm diskettes.  The
gripper housing 1 is attached to the robot Z axis 2.  Control
wires/cables are fed to the gripper via tube 3 and connector 4 to
control the laser interferometer 5 and the disk presence sensor 6.
Shutter 7 is controlled by solenoid 8 and used for laser emission
safety protection.  Sensor 9 detects the position of the shutter.
Disk 10 is held by disk holder 11.  Cassette holder 12 picks up and
holds the cassette 13.

Fig. 2 shows the configuration for 130mm diskettes.  To change
from 275mm diskettes, cassette holder 12 is moved 180 degrees to
serve as 130mm cassette holder 14, used to hold 130mm cassette 15.
275mm disk holder 11 is also removed and three 130mm disk holders 16,
17 and 18 are mounted, each capable of holding up to eight 130mm
disks 19.

Fig. 3 shows the configuration for 95mm diskettes.  The 95mm
cassette holder 14 is the same as the 130mm one.  95mm cassette 20
has twenty five disks.  Three disk holders 21, 22 and 23 are mounted
90 degrees apart.  Each is ca...
