Abstract

Typically, people who use revised or updated software products do not know exactly what has been changed or what is newly available in a new product. When users do know what is new or changed in a product, they do not know how to actually perform the actions required to use the new functions and they typically do not know how to get to the specific functions that are new.

"What's New" Help for New Items/Functions in Software Products

Typically, people who use revised or updated software products
do not know exactly what has been changed or what is newly available
in a new product.  When users do know what is new or changed in a
product, they do not know how to actually perform the actions
required to use the new functions and they typically do not know how
to get to the specific functions that are new.

Provide a "What's New" help function in new releases or
versions of a product.  The "What's New" help would list the new and
changed functions that are in the product.  This list of functions
would also be linked to the product's specific online help for those
functions.

One method of providing this type of help, in OS/2* products,
for example, would be to have a "What's New" push button on the logo
or product information panel.  The "What's New" push button would
bring up a window with a list of topics (features/functions/actions).
These items would be linked directly to the product's help panels.

Another method of providing this type of help, in function
key-driven products, would be to have a specific type of help called
"What's New" off of the main help screen (F1 leads to help, and one
option from this help location would be "What's New" help).
