Sandwiched Backpanel between Conductive Stiffeners

      Described is a sandwiched backplane-stiffener assembly which
includes two stiffeners made of aluminum and without the need for an
additional set of parts to provide insulation between the stiffeners
and each side of the backplane.

      The stiffeners provide stiffness to a two-sided backplane
without the need for an insulator.  For a large backplane, a plastic
stiffener does not provide adequate stiffness; therefore, aluminum is
required, and this can cause electrical shorting when it comes in
direct contact with the backplane.  The solution is to provide raised
areas on the sides of the aluminum stiffeners which face the
backplane and coordinate the design of the backplane to assure there
are no via areas or any other electrical component in the regions
where the raised areas of the stiffeners come in contact with the
backplane.

      The Figure shows one stiffener and shows cutouts for the
backplane connectors and raised areas which come in direct contact
with the stiffener when the assembly is put together.  The raised
areas are high enough to provide adequate space for components on the
backplane, assuring that there is no contact between these components
and the aluminum stiffener.  These components can be parts directly
soldered onto the backplane, such as capacitors, or parts of the
backplane itself which cannot be shorted to other parts, such as
vias.
