Abstract

The Figure shows a system comprising two bus couplers BK1 and BK2 which link bus units BU, memory MEM and processor PROC. If a deadlock situation occurs, it is a known method to suspend one of the operations, in order to solve the deadlock. The following measures serve to enhance the prior-art method of suspending and repeating an operation, if a deadlock occurs:

Method to Avoid Deadlock between Two Bus Couplers

      The Figure shows a system comprising two bus couplers BK1 and
BK2 which link bus units BU, memory MEM and processor PROC.  If a
deadlock situation occurs, it is a known method to suspend one of the
operations, in order to solve the deadlock.  The following measures
serve to enhance the prior-art method of suspending and repeating an
operation, if a deadlock occurs:

1.  Suspension of the operation only up to that component of a chain,
    so that a deadlock situation no longer exists.

2.  Storage of the kind of the deadlock situation in the status of
    the suspended operation.

3.  Repetition of the suspended operation exclusively by the
    hardware.

4.  Blocking of the arbitration until the suspended operation is
    repeated.

5.  Defining a time limit of the blocking of the arbitration for the
    case in which a repetition is not feasible.
