Disclosed is an automated solution in which customers can build Attribute Value (ATV) files for their IBM LAN NetView* Start (Start) networks. With the release of Start 1.0, customers have had the ability to change the attributes of their nodes, adapters, and emulator sessions by either changing the contents of the notebook pages associated with each object or by using an ATV file. Customers can change their network objects faster and easier with ATV files, yet they had to physically construct each file with the attributes relating to each node and the related objects that they wanted to change. Customers requested an easier way to construct ATV files.

      Disclosed is an automated solution in which customers can build
Attribute Value (ATV) files for their IBM LAN NetView* Start (Start)
networks.  With the release of Start 1.0, customers have had the
ability to change the attributes of their nodes, adapters, and
emulator sessions by either changing the contents of the notebook
pages associated with each object or by using an ATV file.  Customers
can change their network objects faster and easier with ATV files,
yet they had to physically construct each file with the attributes
relating to each node and the related objects that they wanted to
change.  Customers requested an easier way to construct ATV files.

      The IBM LAN NetView Start program allows users to configure
nodes and their associated objects (adapters, LAN parameters,
emulator sessions, database parameters, etc.) as well as make LAN,
3270, and database connections between these nodes.  Start uses this
information to generate response files, LAN CID Utility command
files, and/or NetView DM/2 change files to aid in the installation
and configuration of these nodes.  Nodes and connections are stored
in topologies, and these objects in turn are stored in a network,
along with other related objects, such as template folders and
transformers.

      Rather than changing values via a node's notebook pages (which
includes pages for adapters and emulator sessions), the ATV file
allows changes to most parameters related to a node and its objects
with a single ASCII file.  This file is divided into different
sections (NODES, ADAPTERPARMS, EMDFTPARMS, and EMNONDFTPARMS), each
corresponding to a table in the ASCII or SQL databases.  Each section
is further divided into column and value entries.  Each entry has a
one-to-one relationship.  The following shows an exemplary
ADAPTERPARMS section of an ATV file:

Note that the adapter values for node THOMAS will be changed to the
given values when this ATV file is processed.  If the value was the
same, it will not be modified.

      After physically creating the ATV file, users could drag and
drop this file object onto the appropriate topology.  Nodes and their
objects in the targeted topology that were referenced in the ATV file
would be changed.  An ATV status window would log the progress of the
ATV processing and display any errors that were encountered.

      To prevent the user from having to physically create an ATV
file from scratch, this disclosure presents a methodology by which
ATV files can be created automatically.  The generated ATV file would
