      Disclosed is a method to avoid that Operating System (OS)
assigns drive letter to all sockets in which PC storage card can be
inserted.  Socket and PC storage card in this disclosure conform to
PCMCIA/JEIDA.

      OS assigns drive letters for all storage device at its
initialization time, as A, B or C.  To use a PC storage card in the
socket, it is required to assign a drive letter for the socket.  But,
the socket itself is not storage device and is, also, used by other
PC cards like memory card, communication card, etc..  So, there are
some sockets that are not occupied by PC storage cards as storage
devices.

      A program, which manages PC storage card and the socket, needs
to know which socket is not used as storage device.  This information
is given by following parameters to the program at start time:

  1) Socket numbers of sockets not to be assigned drive letter

  2) The number of sockets to be used as storage device.

      The Figure shows how the program manages PC storage cards in
the sockets internally.  'Storage Card Control Block' consists of
card status (no-card in the socket, card inserted..), card
configuration and storage device information (capacity etc.).  The
program uses 'Pointer Table 1' to access control block because OS
requests reading or writing operation with device ID (number).  On
