Abstract

A dynamic pelletized logistics system presents a unique application which requires a mechanical compliant electrostatic discharge (ESD) grounding system installation for ESD in order to protect electronics and hard disk drive component assembly from electrostatic discharge. A mechanical compliant ESD grounding module concept was developed for dynamic mechanical parts to protect them from electrostatic discharge.

      A dynamic pelletized logistics system presents a unique
application which requires a mechanical compliant electrostatic
discharge (ESD) grounding system installation for ESD in order to
protect electronics and hard disk drive component assembly from
electrostatic discharge.  A mechanical compliant ESD grounding module
concept was developed for dynamic mechanical parts to protect them
from electrostatic discharge.

      Fig. 1 shows a mechanical compact module that was developed for
dynamic mechanical parts to protect from electrostatic discharge.
This mechanical package is a compact module and can be inserted or
installed in a dynamic mechanical system.  This ESD grounding device
is in contact with the grounded part.  An ESD roller or ball mounted
on a locator is made of a conductive material fabricated in a Delrin
bushing for ease of replacement and flexibility in mating purposes.
The locator is pressed onto the mating surface with a conductive
spring.  The roller or ball is in contact with the ground part (Figs.
2 and 3).

      The roller/ball is fabricated from an electromagnetic
control/electrostatic discharge (EMC/ESD) type material (Ultem 7201).
The ESD module can be installed in a rotary and linear mechanical
system for ESD with a mating part.  This concept is implemented into
a pallet with a translational motion with respect to the conveyor.
