Stiction Warning System for Hard Disk Drive

      Disclosed is a method that a hard disk drive notifies its host
computer of its high possibility of sticking caused by head and disk
stiction due to a large number of power on/off cycles.

      The Figure shows algorithm of this method.  This algorithm is
controlled by a microprocessor (CPU) of hard disk drive.  When a
spindle motor starts to rotate,its starting current (Ist) is measured
by a circuit that consists of sense resistor and A/D convertor.  Then
measured starting current is compared with a defined critical
starting current (Icr).  In case of Ist > Icr , CPU reads counter (N)
from a reserved area on hard disk drive, and increases it by 1.  Then
CPU compares N with a defined critical number (Ncr).  If N is grater
than Ncr, CPU sends a warning message to its host computer in order
to let an operator take an appropriate action.
