High-Density Magnetic Recording Device by Using SXM Mechanism and
Media with Discrete Cells

      Disclosed is a device for magnetic recording by using the SXM
mechanism.  Magnetic media are small discrete cells, on which digital
signals are read and writen.

      The discrete cell array is shown in Fig. 1.  This array is made
by electron beam lithography that is used for producing an LSI.  The
substrate is made of Si, and underlayer is made of  magnetic metal.

      The read-write scheme is shown in Fig. 2.  A magnetic tip,
controlled by the SXM, moves on a small cell, and the magnetization
of the tip varies.  Then the small tip is magnetized.

      The direction of magnetization is shown in Fig. 3.  It is
controlled by a shape of small cells and a magnetization of tip.
