Abstract

Disclosed is a diagnostics method using an Interface Wrap Card for computer systems having JEIDA/PCMCIA Interface slots. The Interface Wrap Card confirms physical and electrical interface standard of JEIDA/PCMCIA, and the diagnostic program verifies the electrical connection path and the control function of system-JEIDA/PCMCIA Interface. Diagnostics for JEIDA/PCMCIA Interface

      Disclosed is a diagnostics method using an Interface Wrap Card
for computer systems having JEIDA/PCMCIA Interface slots.  The
Interface Wrap Card confirms physical and electrical interface
standard of JEIDA/PCMCIA, and the diagnostic program verifies the
electrical connection path and the control function of
system-JEIDA/PCMCIA Interface.  This diagnostic testing with Wrap
Card can be applied to all systems with JEIDA/PCMCIA Interface both
in a manufacturing test and also in a field test.

      JEIDA (Japan Electronic Industry Development Association) and
PCMCIA (Personal Computer Memory Card International Association)
define a standard of interchangeable "credit card size" Integrated
Circuit Card (IC Cards) [1,2].  The standard defines both "Memory
Card" and "I/O Card" with using a 68-pin interface.  So, the systems
having JEIDA/PCMCIA Interface slots can exchange data, when using
storage type card (e.g., SRAM Card, ROM Card, Solid State File
Card..), or can expand peripheral functions, when using I/O type card
(e.g., Modem Card, LAN Card..), at the same slot.

      Emergence of such IC Cards brings new environment of computer
systems.  Personal Computers having JEIDA/PCMCIA Interfaces increase
with IC Cards, because the small size, light weight, low power
consumption and common interface are very attractive for the "PC
World".  On the other hand, it is important to provide the diagnostic
method of the JEIDA/PCMCIA Interface.  IC Card insertion/removal
occurs frequently, which occurs under inactive-power (cold) and under
active-power (warm), furthermore it may occur under operation (hot).
Interface defect may be caused physically or electrically, and the
probability thereof is higher than that of the other bus interface.
The disclosed diagnostic method is to detect interface failures of
JEIDA/PCMCIA slots in Personal Computer systems.  And this method is
simple, easy-to-use and effective for the systems having JEIDA/PCMCIA
Interface slots commonly.

      Fig. 1 shows the diagnostic method for JEIDA/PCMCIA Interface.
The electrical connection path and the control function of
JEIDA/PCMCIA Interface slot 2 in a Personal Computer 1 is verified to
run a diagnostic program 4 with an Interface Wrap Card 3.

      Fig. 2 shows a block diagram of JEIDA/PCMCIA Wrap Card 3.
