Partial Read/Write Storage in ROM Disk

This article describes a promising way to keep function
expansion within minimum cost by having a part of the ROM Disk
writable.

The product used is a ROM DOS PC.  A few higher megabytes are
used in the ROM Disk, and the DOS program is installed there.
However, the configuration of this DOS is fixed because these DOS
programs are in the read-only memory.  Therefore, it is impossible to
add a new device driver or to change the configuration.

To solve the above problem, the 'Writable Area' is set in the
ROM Disk Area.  And CONFIG.SYS, AUTOEXEC.BAT or new device drivers
are installed in the above writable area.  This way it enables the
expandability with a reasonable cost increase.  Furthermore, in case
bugs are found in the code of the Fixed Program Area, the method to
change the directory and pointer enables the updating of Fixed
Program Area by replacing it with the program in the writable area.
