Precise Dispensing Head Utilizing Disposable Cartridge

      Disclosed is an apparatus and a method for precisely dispensing
liquid encapsulants, sealants, or adhesives from disposable
cartridges.

      The system consists of a positive position-controlled plunger
to effect and control fluid dispensing.  Referring to the Figure, the
disposable cartridge 1, containing the fluid to be dispensed, is
placed into the conforming block 2.  The conforming block holds the
cartridge in place and prevents any distortion of the cartridge
during the application of pressure.  The cartridge is held in place
by a lock 4.  The plunger 3, which is a part of the disposable
system, is controlled by the positioning jack 5.  Forces are applied
to the plunger through motor 6 in a controlled manner such that
precise amounts of fluid are dispensed through the nozzle 10 to form
either dots or bar patterns 11.  The motor assembly is mounted on to
a rigid block 8 that can be moved along three coordinate axes (x, y,
or z).  The syringe assembly is mounted in the conforming block 2.
This conforming block can accommodate cartridges of different volumes
and nozzle sizes.  Each cartridge may contain a different fluid
depending on the application.  Any one of the cartridges can be
brought into position by swivelling the conforming block 2 about the
vertical axis 9.  Since there is no compressibility in the system,
change in the piston position extrudes a precise volume of the
