Low Cost Comb Assembly for Single Disk Hard Drives

      Disclosed is an actuator assembly configured for use in a
single disk hard drive.  Two coil-hub assemblies are described in
addition to a means for attaching the two head-arm assemblies to a
central hub.

      Item (1) in the Figure is a wound voice coil motor coil molded
into a plastic frame.  Openings in the two outer corners of the
molded frame provide thin sections (A) along the edges to serve as
energy absorbers when interacting with motion limiting stops (not
shown).  Also molded into the plastic frame is a stamped metal hub
(2).  The hub serves as a rigid member to which the top and bottom
head-arm assemblies (3) and (4) and the signal carrying flex cable
(5) attach.  This hub is depicted having a large central opening with
an equilateral polyhedral periphery.

      An alternate coil and hub configuration is shown in the lower
right corner of the Figure.  A wound voice coil motor coil (6) is
molded around plastic core.  The core extends above and below the
coil at the base or hub end of the molded assembly.  The base is
configured to mate with and bond to a stamped metal hub (7).  This
hub is depicted with a large cylindrical opening.  Toward the end of
the plastic core opposite the base, an accurate opening (B) is
provided to cooperate with a resilient motion limiting stop (not
