Abstract

Disclosed is a method of informing the user how many data rows will be retrieved based on currently selected filter criteria (before retrieving the data). Therefore, a user will know in advance how much data (how many Events) they will be retrieving. This will provide a safeguard against retrieval of extremely large amounts of data. There also needs to be a way for the user to state how many data rows they want to retrieve, based on the total number that would be retrieved with the current filter criteria.

      Disclosed is a method of informing the user how many data rows
will be retrieved based on currently selected filter criteria (before
retrieving the data).  Therefore, a user will know in advance how
much data (how many Events) they will be retrieving.  This will
provide a safeguard against retrieval of extremely large amounts of
data.  There also needs to be a way for the user to state how many
data rows they want to retrieve, based on the total number that would
be retrieved with the current filter criteria.

      In the LAN NetView* Fix product, there is a component called
the Event Log Browser which displays event data from the LAN NetView
Fix Event Log (Database Manager) table.

      The Browser displays filter panels that allow the user to
specify filter criteria that are applied to the Event Log table, so
that only the event data that meet all criteria are displayed in the
Browser's main display panel.

      This disclosure addresses a method for providing a count of
data rows that match the selected filter criteria, without having to
retrieve any Event data.  This disclosure also addresses a method of
updating the count field to further limit the number of data rows
that are retrieved.
