Abstract

Disclosed is a Continuous Roll Feed Press used for flexible circuit coverlay manufacture. Its advantages over existing manual methods of punching single sheet are fast, accurate, production of contamination-free coverlay. Coverlay is an insulation layer laminated over a flexible circuit. To allow components to be inserted, apertures must first be punched in the coverlay which is then aligned to the etched circuit.

Roll Feed Coverlay Press

      Disclosed is a Continuous Roll Feed Press used for flexible
circuit coverlay manufacture.  Its advantages over existing manual
methods of punching single sheet are fast, accurate, production of
contamination-free coverlay.  Coverlay is an insulation layer
laminated over a flexible circuit.  To allow components to be
inserted, apertures must first be punched in the coverlay which is
then aligned to the etched circuit.

      The press has been designed and built to pitch continuous
coverlay material from a roll, through a press tool, punch the
desired component and reroll the material.  Powered by 3 phase
electrical supply and compressed air, the press is also serviced by a
vacuum motor and two static eliminators.  The feed mechanism is
driven by three stepper motors controlled by a programmable indexer.
The press is a multi-product design and can process varying
thicknesses and widths.  It incorporates other general enhancements
such as quick tool loading.  An old type press took 20 minutes to
change a tool, the new press takes 4 minutes.  Punching, operation
panel alignment, and tool change times have all been reduced.
Coverlay cleaning operations are also eliminated.  The single press
can accommodate every type of flex circuit currently needed.

      Problems when punching single sheets exists in aligning the
punched coverlay apertures to the etched copper pads on the flex.
Frequently, stray slugs of coverlay contaminate the panel causing
yield and time waste.  These shortcomings were not apparent in the
early low technology flex circuits, which originated the traditional
Coverlay Pierce method which continued through to new products, more
demanding and complex.  It resulted in manufacture of closer and
closer toleranced tools and jigs to produce a more accurate coverlay
component which was then aligned to a PC prone to movement.  The
