Abstract

This disclosure describes a mechanism to improve current implementation of multiport source routing bridge. Current implementation requires two Segment Number (SN) in the Routing Information (RI) field for the first hop and one SN field for each additional hop up to a maximum of seven hops total. This disclosure reduces the requirement of two SN fields for the first hop to a single SN field, thus increases the maximum of bridges between two end nodes to eight hops.

Multiport Bridge Routing

This disclosure describes a mechanism to improve current
implementation of multiport source routing bridge.  Current
implementation requires two Segment Number (SN) in the Routing
Information (RI) field for the first hop and one SN field for each
additional hop up to a maximum of seven hops total.  This disclosure
reduces the requirement of two SN fields for the first hop to a
single SN field, thus increases the maximum of bridges between two
end nodes to eight hops.

The RI field as specified in the token ring architecture
consists of two bytes of control field (RC) follow by a maximum of
eight SNs.  Each SN is 2 bytes long and is subdivided into Ring
Number (RN) and Bridge Number (BN).  Fig. 1 shows the formats of both
RI and SN fields.
