Alien Ground Strap

      The techniques described decrease the susceptibility of a
system to uncontrolled electrostatic discharge to a printed circuit
board.

      Since a spark will jump across an air gap at a discontinuity,
roll pin (1) anchorage of a commercial lock down device (2) for a
printed circuit board (not shown), this designed conductive shield
(3) will immune a susceptible board from a direct discharge current.
The non-grounded roll pin (1) with shield (3) in place will now be
grounded to divert any ESD current from sensitive circuits.  A
formable wire (4) secures the shield (3) to the lock down device (2)
(Fig. 1).  Two designs of the shield are demonstrated.  One
configures directly to the lock down device (Fig. 1) while the second
has its flexible ground contacts (5) outside the camming surfaces of
the device (Fig. 2).
