Automated Dual Port Airflow Measurement System

      Described is a hardware implementation to provide automatic
dual port airflow measurements, as used in computer fan mechanisms.
A programmable air flow test stand is described which enables a
computer to control the opening and closing of valves in increments
so that pressure readings can be recorded and plotted.

      In prior art, to obtain fan performance curves, or a box system
impedance curve, adjustments of blower speed and blast gate openings
were made for a specific flow rate based on the calibration curve for
an orifice, or flow element.  In order to establish a curve required
that anywhere from twenty-five to one-hundred points be set and
recorded.  The test pressure readings were plotted on graph paper to
establish the curve.  A fan performance curve was then over-laid on
the box impedance curve to establish the operating point of a
specific fan.  This procedure was repeated for each new style of air
moving device.

      The concept described herein utilizes an automated air flow
test stand to perform the fan measurements.  Two test ports are used
with a speed clamping device so that rapid test set-ups can be
attained to provide flexible testing.  A fully automated computer
controlled system allows for un-attended fan or impedance testing.
