Abstract

Described is a computer system port connector assembly configured for the attachment of either of two types of cables extending to a computer system from a peripheral unit, such as a video monitor. The system connector includes two sections--a primary section connecting the circuits conventionally used to form connections between a system and a peripheral unit, and a secondary section connecting additional circuits. While a conventional type of cable connector engages the primary section of the system connector, a new type of cable connector engages both sections of the system connector.

Compound Connector and Interconnection System

      Described is a computer system port connector assembly
configured for the attachment of either of two types of cables
extending to a computer system from a peripheral unit, such as a
video monitor.  The system connector includes two sections--a primary
section connecting the circuits conventionally used to form
connections between a system and a peripheral unit, and a secondary
section connecting additional circuits.  While a conventional type of
cable connector engages the primary section of the system connector,
a new type of cable connector engages both sections of the system
connector.

      Figs. 1-3 are views of the system port connector configured
particularly for the attachment of a video monitor, with Fig. 1 being
a perspective view, while Fig. 2 and 3 are transverse sectional
elevations taken at section lines II-II and III-III of Fig. 1,
respectively.

      Referring to Figs. 1-3, a system port connector 2 includes an
insulating housing structure 4 and a number of terminal elements 6,
each of which extends from a flexible spring portion 14 to a
soldertail portion 16 extending for solder attachment to a circuit
within a circuit board (not shown) to which the connector 2 is
mounted.  Housing structure 4 includes a primary outward-extending
section 24 and a secondary outward-extending section 26.  A metallic
shell 27 extends generally around the sides of outward-extending
sections 24 and 26 and under the connector to form attachment
features 30 for engaging holes within the circuit board (not shown).

      Figs. 4 and 5 are perspective views of the connector end of a
cable to a video monitor, with Fig. 4 being a conventional cable,
while Fig. 5 is a new type of cable.

      Referring to Fig. 4, a conventional type of cable connector 40,
attached to a display unit (not shown) by means of an electrical
cable 42, includes an insulating housing 44, from which a number of
conductive pins 46 extend in a pattern configured for individual
engagement with the spring portions 14 within primary
outward-extending portion 24 of port connector 2.  A metallic shell
50 extending along the front surface of connector 40, includes an
outward-extending flange 52, surrounding the pattern of conductive
pins 46.  Cable connector 40 also includes a pair of screws 54, which
engage threaded holes 56 in port connector 2, as connectors 40 and 2
are brought together, with pins 46 engaging spring portions 14 and
flange 52 engaging shell 27.

      Referring to Fig. 5, a compound cable connector 60, connected
to a display unit by means of a cable 70, includes a single
insulating housing 62 holding a primary group of pins 64, extending
in a pattern configured for individual engagement with the spring
portions 14 within outward-extending portion 24 of port connector 2,
and a secondary group of pins 66, extending in a pattern configured
