Direct Manipulation Control for Container Objects

A "Resources" container showing the vertical scrollbar and
iconic label which can be used to manipulate the container and its
contents.

Disclosed is a direct manipulation control to be used in a
family of graphical user interface applications to enclose objects.
It is unique in its ability to manipulate both the container and the
enclosed objects by selection and manipulation of the container
itself.

In a graphical user interface, it is often necessary to contain
objects within other objects.  The number of contained objects is
often larger than can be viewed at once.  Being able to manipulate
the contained objects as a group is useful.  The direct manipulation
control being disclosed can contain an arbitrary number of objects
and allow them to be manipulated as a group.

The purpose of this container object is for use in a family of
graphical user interface applications.  It has an iconic header which
can be used to manipulate the container and its contents.  The
container object is vertically scrollable, allowing for an arbitrary
number of enclosed objects.  For space conservation, a horizontal
scrollbar is not provided (Figure).

Typical manipulations performed on the container and its
contents using the iconic header are the following actions (not an
exhaustive list): expand, contract, sort, find, filter.  These
manipulations are performed by some combination of...
