Multi Purpose Connector Protection System

      New high density connector systems require more and more
sensitive mechanical designs.  Especially thin connector pins require
protection against damage, contamination and EMC/ESD (electro
magnetic compatibility/electro static discharging) impacts.
While the female contacts are usually encapsulated into their
connector housings, the male connector pins stand out unprotected.

      This design proposal describes a solution to protect male
connector pins of card/board, card/card or card/cable contact
systems.  Characteristic of this solution is a added cover, which is
locked in the connector housing.  This cover has openings for the
connector pins according to the pin arrangement.  It is automatically
held in it's protection ('close') position by spring load.  This
cover is automatically pushed 'open', when the female mating
connector is plugged.  A cover latching mechanism, actuated by the
female connector guide pins allows safe protection and may be used
for connector retention as well.  Unintentional opening is not
possible.  Added design details take care for tolerance compensation,
connector/pin alignment, connector retention and EMC/ESD protection.
