Abstract

A soldering iron that exhibits a flexible, pressure sensitive tip has been developed and is illustrated in the Figure. Soldering iron tip 1 and front soldering iron barrel section 2 are fastened to spring 3. Rear soldering iron barrel section 4 is fastened to spring 3 forming flexible link 5 between front soldering iron barrel section 2 and rear soldering iron barrel section 4. During light touch soldering operations, flexible link 5 does not flex. Excessive tip pressure flexes flexible link 5. The pressure sensitivity of the soldering iron tip 1 is governed by the rigidity of spring 3.

Pressure Sensitive Soldering Iron

A soldering iron that exhibits a flexible, pressure sensitive
tip has been developed and is illustrated in the Figure.  Soldering
iron tip 1 and front soldering iron barrel section 2 are fastened to
spring 3.  Rear soldering iron barrel section 4 is fastened to spring
3 forming flexible link 5 between front soldering iron barrel section
2 and rear soldering iron barrel section 4.  During light touch
soldering operations, flexible link 5 does not flex.  Excessive tip
pressure flexes flexible link 5.  The pressure sensitivity of the
soldering iron tip 1 is governed by the rigidity of spring 3.

The pressure sensitive soldering iron offers the following benefits:

o   The elimination of raised lands on printed wiring boards.

o   The minimization of the severity of iron burns to printed wiring
    board laminate.

o   The minimization of "White Spots" and delamination in printed
    wiring board laminate.

o   The minimization of soldering iron tip damage to delicate
    components.

o   It assists the identification of component or printed wiring
    board solderability problems.

o   It is a valuable training aid for light touch hand soldering.

o   It is a visual identifier of improper soldering technique.
