Abstract

Disclosed is a new card support for desk side RS/6000 products. As shown in Fig. 1, the original card support has dual functions: 1) supports the ends of adapter cards, and 2) directs air flow to cool electrical components on I/O planar. In order to cool new graphic cards requiring additional cooling, a fan is needed to provide additional air flow. To accommodate this additional fan in the same area of the original card support, the new card support is designed and installed in the current deskside products.

Convertible Card Support

Disclosed is a new card support for desk side RS/6000 products.
As shown in Fig. 1, the original card support has dual functions: 1)
supports the ends of adapter cards, and 2) directs air flow to cool
electrical components on I/O planar.  In order to cool new graphic
cards requiring additional cooling, a fan is needed to provide
additional air flow.  To accommodate this additional fan in the same
area of the original card support, the new card support is designed
and installed in the current deskside products.

The standard solution to this type of problem would be to
create a unique card support for mounting the fan, when required,
that would replace the original card support.  This would result in
an additional part number, the waste of disposing of the original
card support, and the cost of extra service time to remove the
original card support and replace it with the unique part, just to
add the required fan.

This invention describes a novel approach to solving the
problem.  As seen in Fig. 2, the new card support, with the air
deflector plate installed, can directly replace the original card
support as standard equipment, obsoleting the original part.  The
aluminum air deflector plate slides into grooves in the card support
and has two arms which latch onto plastic tabs molded into the
support.  If the adapter cards requiring additional cooling are
installed in the machine, first the air deflector plate will...
