Captive Cover Screw

Disclosed is a cover screw design that will retain the screw in
a vertical position in the cover when extracted from its
tapped/inserted mounting hole.

As each screw is turned counter clockwise it lifts the cover
slightly as it finds the correct pitch spacing between the threaded
cover and threaded/inserted mounting hole.  Once the pitches are
matched the screw will be threaded into the cover, thereby being
retained in the vertical position ready for cover installation.

The design is quite effective when proper cover removal and
installation are employed, as shown in the Figure.

This concept may also be used for other series screws as well,
provided the proper clearances are maintained.

Cover Installation Instructions:

Washer is threaded on screw after screw is in cover.

Sequentially turn each screw in a clockwise direction 6 turns
until all screws are approximately one and a half turns from cover.
Proceed to turn each screw until a torque value of 5.5 in/lb is
reached.

Cover Removal Instructions:

Sequentially back off each screw in a counter-clockwise
direction one and a half turns.  After all screws have been
sequentially backed off, proceed to turn each screw in a
counter-clockwise direction until all screws have disengaged from the
structure and are now secured into cover.
