Method for Migrating LAN Area Network Server Accounts to Distributed
Computing Environment Registry

Disclosed is a method for migrating LAN Server accounts to the
Distributed Computing Environment* (DCE) registry.

The IBM OS/2* LAN Server's domain controller can take advantage
of the DCE security architecture by storing LAN Server user accounts
in the DCE registry.  To automate the process of migrating user
accounts from a LAN server database to a DCE registry, the following
two user migration utilities were developed:

1.  User Export Utility which extracts the user and group information
from the User Accounts Subsystem (UAS) and writes them to an
    ASCII file.

2.  User Import Utility which reads the user and group information
from the ASCII file and creates user accounts in the DCE
    registry.

All the user and group attributes which are common to both the
LAN Server and the DCE environments were migrated and stored as
normal attributes of a DCE account.  All the LAN Server specific
attributes (attributes which are not defined in a DCE account) will
be stored in the registry by using the Extended Registry Attribute
(ERA) capability provided by DCE.  The import utility will use
appropriate default values for all DCE specific attributes (DCE
account attributes which are not defined in a LAN server).

The User Export Utility - USEREXP.EXE - can be run any LAN
Server domain controller whose user account info...
