Method for the Automatic Identification of Paper Stock

      A method is disclosed for:

1.  Identifying marks on the paper or forms

2.  A reader in the printer compatible with those identifying marks.

      This solution proposes a paper stock description language
(PSDL) similar in concept to the DX coding that today appears on most
packages of 35mm film.  The idea is that the paper or forms carry an
unobtrusive mark that uniquely identifies that piece of paper or that
form.  The marking would be comprised of basic information about that
paper or form, for example:

o   Identification number

o   Name of the form

o   Packaging: cut sheets or continuous

o   Parts: the number of copies

o   etc..

      Each piece of cut sheet paper or forms stock would be
pre-printed with this mark carrying the information about the paper.
Continuous forms would be marked every few feet.

      The mark would be printed in an unobtrusive color in an
unobtrusive location on the forms.  For example, in ultraviolet ink
on the back of a form.  The marking would be in the form of a bar
code or other opt ically recognizable form.

      To read the mark, the printer would be designed or retrofitted
with a compatible optical recognition device.  For example, a bar
code reader with an appropriate light source for the type of marking
used on the paper or forms.

      As the paper enters the printer, the reader observes the
markings on the paper or forms.  The ...
